This week we’re going to explore another block you may have toward self-care.

A lack of motivation

Motivation is the need to do something with your life, be it personal, work, hobbies, school or sports. It is an innate desire to accomplish a goal or dream. Here, the goal is self-care.

Another common challenge to building a self-care routine is a lack of motivation. Maybe you feel that creating a self-care routine is overwhelming and takes a lot of time. If it seems like a monumental task, it can zap your motivation. If there are other things going on in your life, it can contribute to the overwhelm. The first time someone said to me I need to take better care of myself, I remember thinking that is just another thing I have to put on my already extensive TODO list. That ain’t happening.

Now I understand the benefit of doing something-one thing-every day for my own self-care.

Let me note here that if you believe you’re feeling depressed, please consult with a mental health professional. At the very least, talk your feelings out with someone you trust.

“An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.” ~ Unknown

The key to building a sustainable self-care routine that you can feel good about is to focus on making minor changes at a time. There is no need to create a full self-care routine. Just think of one area you want to improve, then set yourself small goals. As you reach each goal, it’s going to boost your motivation to continue.

Being able to motivate yourself will help you accomplish any goal you set in life, including doing more to care for your own self.

Now that you’re motivated, next week let’s explore why you might think self-care is selfish.
